Text message blows up suicide bomber by accident

A "Black Widow" suicide bomber planned a terrorist attack in central Moscow on New Year's Eve but was killed when an unexpected text message set off her bomb too early, according to Russian security sources.
The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt near Red Square on New Year's Eve in an attack that could have killed hundreds.
Security sources believe a message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her at a safe house.
Islamist terrorists in Russia often use mobile phones as detonators. The bomber's handler, who is usually watching their charge, sends the bomber a text message in order to set off his or her explosive belt at the moment when it is thought they can inflict maximum casualties.
The dead woman has not been identified, but her husband is apparently serving time in jail for being a member of a radical Islamist terror group. More

Internet cut as Egypt braces for 'march of millions'

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Egypt's government has posted troops at key locations and cut internet service as anti-government protesters planned a "march of millions" Tuesday.
Activists pledged to hold major demonstrations in cities throughout the country -- a week after rallies began calling for President Hosni Mubarak's resignation.
But Mubarak, who has ruled Egypt for nearly 30 years under a sweeping emergency decree, has given no indication that he plans to give up power.
His government planned to shut down mobile phone networks, closed banks and schools and continued a curfew in preparation for Tuesday's protests.
Protesters have defied previous curfew orders. And late Monday night, Google announced a new technology option that could help Egyptians get around restrictions on mobile phone and internet service.
The new "speak-to-tweet" service allows people without an internet connection to leave a voice-mail message, which will automatically be turned into a tweet, according to a description on Google's blog.
The political turmoil has paralyzed commerce and disrupted daily life in Egypt.
State television reported Monday that the crisis has cost the country an estimated 69 billion Egyptian pounds (nearly $12 billion) and set its economy back six months.
ATM screens went dark. Gas stations ran out of fuel. Long lines snaked around bakeries and supermarkets as shops began to ration how much food customers could buy. Men with makeshift weapons guarded neighborhoods, creating checkpoints to fill the void left when police stopped patrolling the streets.

Dating Site PlentyofFish Hacked in Bizarre Scheme

Dating site PlentyofFish.com was hit by hackers this weekend, but rather than a quick data grab, the alleged hacker carried out a scheme that involved tales of Russian mobsters, extortion plots, late-night phone calls, and a noted tech reporter, according to the site's CEO.
The hackers successfully exported 345 accounts from the PlentyofFish (POF) database, and then tried to convince the site to hire them as a security team. If POF refused, the hackers said they would release the data to the press, the company said.
"The breach was sealed in minutes and the Plentyoffish team had spent several days testing its systems to ensure no other vulnerabilities were found. Several security measures, including forced password reset, had been imposed," POF said in a statement. "Plentyoffish is bringing on several security companies to perform an external security audit, and will take all measures necessary to make sure our users are safe."
The back story, however, is a but more juicy - and weird. POF chief executive Marcus Frind on Monday published a lengthy blog post that he said was not an official statement from his company but instead a "a personal post about what it feels like to be hacked /extorted and the intense pressure and stress you are put under."
According to Frind, an Argentinian hacker named Chris Russo contacted him to say that Russian hackers had taken over his computer, were downloading the site's database, and had threatened to kill him. Russo was allegedly in a panic and told Frind that he had to fly to Argentina or Washington, DC to help stop the attacks.
Russo "says the Russians have complete access to everything including our bank accounts, and they want to steal about $30 million from a string of dating sites including ours," Frind wrote. "Not only that, he tells us 5 or 6 other dating sites in the industry have been breached, and he gives me what he claims is the administrative password for a dating company I won't name but it's very famous."
Later, Russo and a business partner identified as Luca tell Frind that "in exchange for complete access to all of our source code and SQL servers they can make sure we aren't attacked again," Frind wrote.
Frind said he responded by saying that he would "sue them out of existence if the data comes out." He then apparently e-mailed Russo's mother, but did not say if that helped the situation.
Frind also said he received a phone call from former Washington Post reporter Brian Krebs asking about the security breach. Given that Krebs and Russo were friends on Facebook, Frind said he initially suspected that Krebs might in on the hack, but later reconsidered.
"Just to be clear krebs didn't have anything to do with this. I was trying to convey how the hacker tried to create a mass sense of confusion at all times so you never know whats real and what is not," Frind wrote in an update to his blog post.
On his own blog, Krebs acknowledged that Frind had "mildly" backtracked on accusing him of participating in the hack. Krebs wrote that Russo contacted him earlier this month to say that he had found flaws in pof.com that allowed him to view account and password information about POF users.
"He said the information was being circulated in the hacker community, and that he could prove the flaws existed if I simply created a free user account on the site. I did so, and Russo proceeded to read me my registration information," Krebs said.

CBS orders replacements for "Two and a Half Men"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS has ordered two additional episodes of Monday sitcoms "Mike and Molly" and "Rules of Engagement" to help cope with scheduling issues arising from the absence of Charlie Sheen from the hit show "Two and a Half Men," according to sources.
These extra shows will fill in a schedule with sudden holes caused by the absence of Sheen, who reportedly is attempting a rehabilitation program at home with a trained expert in addiction. (Sheen's spokesman declined comment on the actor's health, citing federal privacy laws.)
TMZ has reported that Sheen, who was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital last Thursday complaining of abdominal pains, will be unable to work for three months. A CBS source says that the network has not been informed that Sheen will be out for the season, but his absence would leave CBS short of eight episodes of the planned 24-episode season (there has been no serious talk of shooting the series around his absence).
Warner Bros. Television, which makes "Men" and "Mike" (both from studio-based executive producer Chuck Lorre), would not comment on the additional episode order. TMZ claimed Warners and CBS played a role in selecting the addiction specialist treating Sheen, but Warners would not comment on what role it played (if any) in locating the expert. Neither CBS nor Sony Pictures Television, which makes "Rules," immediately responded to requests for comment.
CBS has said in a statement that a shutdown of "Men" "is not material" to the network. "Any ratings declines will be more than offset by the reduced programing costs for episodes lost this season," the network said.
Describing its schedule as "strong and deep with hit series," CBS said it is not reliant on one show. "In addition, 'Two and a Half Men' has always performed well in repeats," the network said.

Erik Spoelstra's goal for the Miami Heat on Monday night was a complete effort. He littered his team's pregame strategy board with "complete" on every item.

While the Heat emerged with a resounding 117-90 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, it hardly was a complete game. After pushing to a 19-point second-quarter lead, the Heat saw the Cavaliers close within nine at halftime and three early in the third quarter.

Of course, it wasn't going to get much better than that for the shorthanded Cavaliers, who are enduring the cruelest form of complete misery.

"We wanted to play a complete game," Spoelstra said. "We're starting to feel like we're almost complete, with a healthy group right now. We didn't necessarily play the complete game that I was looking for."

While the victory extended the Heat's winning streak to three, after a run of five losses in six games, the loss continued the punch-line existence of Byron Scott's team.

Egyptians turn to Internet dial-up services

"Number of the day 30

That's how many old-fashioned dial-up Internet services are being offered to Egyptians to get around the government's shutdown of the Web, according to French Data Network. Internet traffic in Egypt was disrupted Friday after demonstrators took to the streets demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. 'This is definitely an open attack from a state against the Internet,' says the group, which is offering Web access over international phone lines with dial-in numbers and entry codes.

Storm Cancels Flights, May Set Chicago Record, Ices New York - Businessweek

"Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- A two-stage winter storm sweeping through the U.S. has caused more than 2,800 flights to be canceled today and threatens to break snow records in Chicago and coat New York City in ice.

New York may receive 3 to 5 inches (7.6 to 12.7 centimeters) of snow and an additional 0.3 inch of ice, according to Nelson Vaz, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton, New York. Chicago may get close to two feet of snow, which would break a 44-year-old snowfall record.

“It is going to be a two-stage storm and the strongest punch will be late Tuesday night into Wednesday,” Vaz said by telephone. “Anytime you are talking over a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of ice, that can cause problems. It is going to be hazardous conditions.”

A blizzard warning stretched from Wisconsin to Oklahoma including Chicago yesterday, while winter storm warnings, watches and advisories covered the U.S. from Maine to New Mexico, according to the weather service. As of 11:30 p.m. East Coast time, 2,806 flights were canceled, according to FlightAware, a Houston-based firm that tracks flight data.

AppleInsider | Google overtakes Nokia as top smartphone platform maker

"Research firm Canalys revealed Monday that the 32.9 million handsets running a Google platform, which includes Android, OMS and Tapas, sold last quarter were enough to topple Nokia's Symbian, which had sales of 31 million, from the number one place, Reuters reports.

Google saw 615 percent growth year over year, compared to Nokia's 30 percent growth. Apple came in third with 16.2 million iPhones sold, giving it 16 percent of the global smartphone market. Research in Motion and Microsoft rounded out the list with 14 percent and 3 percent of the market respectively.

Though Nokia still maintains a sizable lead as the largest handset maker in the world, it has lost significant ground in the smartphone market in recent years. Former CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo admitted last year that the Finnish handset maker had failed to make a splash in the U.S. smartphone market.

In September, Nokia went through a major management shakeup. The company first announced it would change CEOs, bringing in Microsoft executive Stephen Elop, in hopes of reenergizing the company's smartphone offerings. The company's smartphone chief announced his resignation several days later, then Nokia Chairman Jorma Ollila declared his intention to step down.

Nokia's flagship N8 smartphone saw numerous delays on its way to market. The company even went through a lost prototype debacle similar to the leak of an Apple iPhone 4 prototype that made headlines last year. Though sales of the N8 reportedly reached around 4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010, the figures have been viewed as too little too late for Nokia.

First Americans evacuated from Egypt

Cairo, Egypt  The first of two charter planes carrying U.S. citizens out of chaotic Egypt landed Monday in Cyprus, the beginning of what could be a lengthy evacuation effort amid escalating unrest across the country.
At least two flights, carrying 219 Americans between them, were able to take off before Egypt's 3 p.m. curfew went into effect, according to the U.S. State Department.
The first flight, carrying 42 people, landed in Cyprus, according to the State Department. The second, carrying 177 Americans, took off Monday for Athens, Greece, but had not yet landed, the government said.
With at least 2,400 people seeking evacuation as of Monday morning, getting all Americans out of the country could take some time, said Janice Jacobs, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for consular affairs.
"People should be prepared for a very long wait," Jacobs said.

Analysis: The US moral conundrum in Egypt

WASHINGTON – As with Iran 30 years ago, American leaders again are wrestling with the moral conflict between Washington's demands for democracy among its friends and strategic coziness with dictatorial regimes seen as key to stability in an increasingly complex world, particularly the Middle East.
The turmoil in Egypt — and its potential for grave consequences for U.S. policy throughout the region — was inevitable. The recent WikiLeaks release of U.S. diplomatic reports showed that Washington knew what problems it increasingly faced with the regime of President Hosni Mubarak and his three decades of iron-fisted rule.
As importantly, the U.S. handling of Egyptian uprising, regardless of how it plays out, now has other close American friends in the Middle East — particularly in Saudi Arabia and Jordan — watching closely, looking for foreshadowings of what might be in store for them.
For that reason, U.S. officials have taken great pains to walk a middle line between Mubarak, an old friend and bulwark ally in the Arab world, and the street protests that threaten to drive him from power.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was spreading that message widely on U.S. television talk shows Sunday.

AARP offers free tax preparation program - journal-news.net | News, sports, jobs, community information for Martinsburg - The Journal

"MARTINSBURG - The AARP Tax-Aide free tax preparation program will begin preparing 2010 federal and state tax returns today.

It will have 10 locations this year, since it added a location at South Jefferson Public Library. The Saturday location for Jefferson County is new this year and will be at the Ranson Civic Center. The program continues to serve families and individuals of all ages with both sites that are appointment-only and walk-in sites.

Some are open Saturdays and evenings for working families.

The tax law that was passed at the end of 2010 restored some tax benefits that were due to expire. Unfortunately, because of the late passage of the bill, some forms will not be available at the start of the tax season. The program will not be able to prepare returns for some taxpayers until March 1. This includes taxpayers who claim the educator expense deduction, claim a deduction for tuition and fees, claim the first-time homebuyers credit or repayment of the prior credit or those who itemize deductions (Schedule A).

Program officials encourage everyone to wait until they have all their information before coming in. This is especially true for interest and dividend statements and brokerage statements.

All program volunteers are ready to help in any way and look forward to seeing regular clients and meeting new ones. All sites are subject to school and county closings due to holidays and inclement weather.

Two El-AL planes carrying 400 Israelis return from Cairo

Egypt’s most prominent reform advocate called on Sunday for President Hosni Mubarak to resign after the powerful military stepped up its presence across the anarchic capital, closing roads with tanks and sending F-16 fighter jets streaking over downtown.

Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei appeared in Tahrir Square around 7 p.m. “You are the owners of this revolution. You are the future,” he told the cheering crowd.

“Our essential demand is the departure of the regime and the beginning of a new Egypt in which each Egyptian lives in virtue, freedom and dignity.”

The army’s show of force appeared aimed at quelling looting, armed robbery and arson that broke out alongside pro-democracy protests and have turned the cultural heart of the Arab world into a tableau of once-unimaginable scenes of chaos.

The military made no attempt to disperse some 5,000 protesters gathered at Tahrir Square, a plaza in the heart of downtown Cairo that protesters have occupied since Friday afternoon.

They had violated the curfew to call for the ouster of Mubarak’s regime, which they blame for poverty, unemployment, widespread corruption and police brutality.

Suez Canal Operating Normally Despite Protest | World | Epoch Times

"Egypt’s Suez Canal has been running normally despite the nationwide protest against President Hosni Mubarak reaching an unprecedented scale, an official told Reuters on Sunday, Jan. 30.

The unrest in the Egyptian cities of Suez, Cairo, and Alexandria ignited concerns that the canal would be closed, which would dramatically increase the demand for oil and tankers. The Suez is a vital source of revenue for the North African country’s economy.

'Traffic has been running normally, with 45 to 50 ships passing through the canal per day,' Ahmed al-Manakhi, a member of the Suez Canal Authority's board of directors, told Reuters.

'The Suez has not come under any attacks, and the canal is able to manage navigation,' he added.

Artificial pancreas shows promise in pregnancy | Reuters

"British researchers used a so-called 'closed-loop insulin delivery system' or artificial pancreas, in 10 pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes and found it provided the right amount of insulin at the right time, maintained near normal blood sugar, and prevented dangerous drops in blood sugar levels at night.

'To discover an artificial pancreas can help maintain near-normal glucose levels in these women is very promising,' said Helen Murphy of Cambridge University, who led the study.

The experimental artificial pancreas was created by combining a continuous glucose monitor, or CGM, with an insulin pump, both of which are already used separately by many people with type 1 diabetes.

Previous trials in children with the condition found that using an artificial pancreas system at night improved blood glucose control and reduced hypoglycaemia -- when the level of glucose in the blood falls too low [ID:nLDE6130BW]

The bodies of type 1 diabetes sufferers become unable to properly break down sugar and if untreated, blood vessels and nerves are destroyed, organs fail and patients can die.

Pregnancy can be particularly risky for women with diabetes as hormonal changes make it very difficult to keep blood glucose levels within a safe range, especially at night.

As a result of high blood glucose levels, babies of women with diabetes are five times as likely to be stillborn, three times as likely to die in their first months of life and twice as likely to have a major deformity, the researchers said.

Data from previous studies suggest that pregnant women with type 1 diabetes spend an average of ten hours a day with glucose levels outside recommended targets, said Murphy, whose findings were published in the journal Diabetes Care.

Local News | Guard's boyfriend upset about delay in search | Seattle Times Newspaper

"MONROE — Jayme Biendl was so prompt 'you could set your watch' by her, so why did she remain missing for nearly 90 minutes on the night she died, her boyfriend wondered during a memorial vigil Sunday night.

'Does that mean she's lying there for an hour and a half?' asked Ken King, who had dated Biendl for five years. His conclusion: 'They did not bother to look for Jayme.'

Biendl, found strangled with a microphone cord at the chapel of the Monroe Correctional Complex late Saturday, felt 'isolated' at that post, said King, describing the chapel as 'out there on an island.'

'She's been expressing her concerns for quite a while,' said King, 46, of Mukilteo. 'She's out there alone at this time of night with inmates in there for anything from rape to murder.'

About 100 people, many of them fellow correctional officers, joined a roadside vigil lit with candles late Sunday.

Egypt unrest, Obama: U.S. cautiously prepares for post-Mubarak era - latimes.com

"The Obama administration appears to be now preparing for an Egypt without President Hosni Mubarak, pushing the hard-line 82-year-old leader to swiftly meet the cry from the streets for greater political freedom while growing ever-more doubtful that their longtime ally can survive the upheaval.

The administration is not yet ready to abandon Mubarak — at least in public. Officials continue to strike a cautious tone in their statements, fearing that openly supporting calls for Mubarak's removal would alarm other U.S. allies in the region.

But both current and former government officials say the days of autocratic government in Egypt are over — with or without Mubarak.

'They don't want to push Mubarak over the cliff, but they understand that the Mubarak era is over and that the only way Mubarak could be saved now is by a ruthless suppression of the population, which would probably set the stage for a much more radical revolution down the road,' said a former senior U.S. advisor who said he has discussed the crisis with ex-colleagues still in the administration. He spoke on condition of anonymity so he could be more candid on a topic of sensitive debate inside the administration.

'They recognized that change was coming,' said the former official, adding that the administration recognized as early as Wednesday that it could not try to save the Mubarak regime at all costs.

Cairo riots puzzle Uganda police

Kampala

The riots might be thousands of kilometres away in Egypt, but the developments are being watched and followed closely all over the globe, Kampala inclusive.

For the Uganda police, the manner in which their Egyptian counterparts have handled demonstrations calling for an end to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year-old reign, could push them into re-thinking their crowd control methods.

Apparently, basing on the three-decade stability of the Mubarak regime, the Uganda police contacted Cairo to help it develop a policing model—especially on crowd control.

Training bond
Last year, two Egyptian police colonels flew to Uganda and have been leading a team at Masindi in training Ugandan officers on crowd control among other skills. They also have been advising police chief Kale Kayihura on how best Uganda can adopt the Egyptian policing model.

The package has also included Egypt offering Ugandan officers scholarships to train in their academies up north. Some of the recipients of this exchange are Gen. Kayihura, the Force's human resource director, Mr Richard Bisherurwa, Masindi Police Training School commandant Andrew Kaweesi, Mr Moses Kafeero, the Kampala South regional police commander, and several anti-riot police commanders.

One officer, who had attended a course in Egypt, told Daily Monitor that they want to use the same skills Egyptian Police uses to quell riots. "The Egyptian police have managed to control riots and protests in their country through amassing numbers bigger than the expected protestors," a senior police officer told Daily Monitor. Some watchers think this has informed the draft outside the regular police recruitment, ahead of next month's elections.

The police are currently recruiting 30 people per sub-county who are trained as crime preventers. Whereas the Force says these will help in community policing, the opposition argue that they are militias trained to help the NRM cheat elections. But with the new developments in Egypt, some officers in Kampala are wondering whether the model is feasible after all.

"With developments that caught the Egyptian authorities off guard and exposed the police effectiveness, we are wondering whether that model is impeccable as earlier thought," said an officer who has trained in Egypt, but asked to speak on condition of anonymity. "The matter has not come up for discussion within the senior ranks though," he added.

When protestors in Egypt last Tuesday began taking to the streets, they were met by hundreds of police, who have been accused of using extreme methods, including firing live ammunition into demonstrators.

On Friday, after prayers, thousands of Egyptians poured onto to the streets.
The police, who came again out with lethal force were, however, overwhelmed and by Saturday morning were nowhere to be seen. They had fled. Instead the army took control of the streets, checking the violence that was erupting.
Yesterday, police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba told Daily Monitor that the Egyptian officers were in the country to advise the Uganda police on establishment of an academy. "The riot police procedures we use are from the United Kingdom and Ireland," Ms Nabakooba said.

China to create largest mega city in the world with 42 million people

City planners in south China have laid out an ambitious plan to merge together the nine cities that lie around the Pearl River Delta.
The "Turn The Pearl River Delta Into One" scheme will create a 16,000 sq mile urban area that is 26 times larger geographically than Greater London, or twice the size of Wales.
The new mega-city will cover a large part of China's manufacturing heartland, stretching from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and including Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing. Together, they account for nearly a tenth of the Chinese economy.
Over the next six years, around 150 major infrastructure projects will mesh the transport, energy, water and telecommunications networks of the nine cities together, at a cost of some 2 trillion yuan (£190 billion). An express rail line will also connect the hub with nearby Hong Kong.
"The idea is that when the cities are integrated, the residents can travel around freely and use the health care and other facilities in the different areas," said Ma Xiangming, the chief planner at the Guangdong Rural and Urban Planning Institute and a senior consultant on the project.

Saudi Arabia Voices Support for Mubarak

Saudi Arabia strongly criticized Egyptian protesters and voiced support for beleaguered Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday, appearing to underscore growing concern across the Arab world over possible spill-over from popular protests that have ousted Tunisia's long-time strongman and now threaten Mr. Mubarak's grip on power.
In a statement carried by Saudi's state news agency, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud said protests rocking Egypt were instigated by "infiltrators," who "in the name of freedom of expression, have infiltrated into the brotherly people of Egypt, to destabilize its security."
The king said protesters had been "exploited to spew out their hatred in destruction . . . inciting a malicious sedition,'' according to the statement, posted on the English website of the Saudi Press Agency.
The statement said the king telephoned Mr. Mubarak early Saturday and had been "reassured about the situation in Egypt." Saudi Arabia and Egypt have been strong allies in the region, representing two of the most important U.S.-allied Arab bulwarks against Iran.
In the wake of the Tunisia unrest, several Arab regimes, including Jordan and Yemen, have also been rocked by large protests. Those demonstrations and the ones now buffeting Egypt have raised the specter of protests spreading wider, including to the relatively wealthy, but still-authoritarian, Arab regimes of the Persian Gulf.
The king's harsh criticism of the Egyptian protesters on Saturday suggested Riyadh is eager to signal it won't tolerate unrest inside the kingdom's own borders.
Saudi's oil wealth has allowed Riyadh to insulate the Saudi population to some degree from the economic ills that have helped trigger the recent regional unrest. Flush with oil revenues, Saudi has embarked on a massive infrastructure and development splurge, including plans for giant new cities aimed at creating jobs for its ballooning youth.

In Dubai, the state of The World is in dispute - Yahoo! News

"DUBAI (AFP) – A cluster of 300 artificial islands off Dubai's coast in the shape of a global map is stable, its developer Nakheel insists, despite a court claim alleging that 'The World' was neglected and eroding away.

'There is no issue with the stability of The World islands that are approximately 70 percent sold and handed over,' a Nakheel spokesman said when asked about the allegations.

'The island purchasers (have) the responsibility to proceed with their developments in due course,' he added.

The islands, many of which represent individual countries and which can only be accessed by boat or helicopter, were meant to be one of the Gulf city-state's crowning developments.

Builders have announced plans for a few of the islands, but development has yet to begin on most of them.

A company contracted to provide logistics support to the islands filed a claim with a tribunal that handles cases related to the emirate's troubled Dubai World conglomerate, alleging that third-party developers had not been encouraged to develop the islands, and said they were being hit by erosion.

Nakheel subsidiary The World LLC 'did not develop the project as anticipated at the time of the agreement and the project has lain largely undeveloped,' according to the claim filed by Penguin Marine Boats Services LLC.

Penguin is contracted to pay 'a licence fee of 5 million dirhams ($1.36 million dollars) per annum' to conduct operations, but the lack of development on the islands means it has 'been unable to develop its business opportunities,' the claim said.

Nelson Mandela's release from hospital calms national alarm

South Africans breathed a collective sigh of relief today when Nelson Mandela was discharged from hospital after treatment for an acute respiratory infection.
Speculation about the frail 92-year-old's health went into overdrive as he spent a second night in hospital while official details of his condition appeared subject to a virtual blackout.
But Mandela returned home today and officials moved to assure the public he was "well" and in high spirits, even joking with his wife and nurses.
Kgalema Motlanthe, acting president of South Africa while Jacob Zuma is abroad, told a packed press conference that he had just visited Mandela, who was sitting up in bed.
"When I walked into the ward, his exact words were he was very happy to see me," said Motlanthe, adding that Mandela was making light of the situation with his wife, Graca Machel, and ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
"He's in good spirits and was joking with us and teasing Graca and Mama Winnie and the sisters. Even for me to come to the press conference he told me, 'Look, I won't detain you any longer.'"

Missing mom, 2nd woman found buried in SW Mich.

PAW PAW, Mich. (AP) — The bodies of two women who were apparently shot to death, including a stay-at-home mother of two missing since earlier this week, have been found buried in southwest Michigan, authorities announced Friday.
The bodies of Amy Henslee, 30, and Tonya Howarth, 36, have been found in Bangor Township, about 60 miles southwest of Grand Rapids, and a suspect is in custody, officials said. The wooded area is north of Henslee's Hartford Township home, where she was last seen Monday.
"It appears that they both died of multiple gunshot wounds," Van Buren County Prosecutor Juris Kaps told reporters at a news conference.
Kaps said police have arrested 34-year-old Junior Lee Beebe on two counts of open murder and two counts of possession of a firearm during a felony. Beebe was expected to be arraigned in court later Friday.
The District Court in Paw Paw said it didn't know whether Beebe has a lawyer. The Sheriff's department did not immediately return a call.
Beebe is a cousin of Henslee's husband, said Kaps, a spokesman for the county's Major Crimes Task Force. Howarth was an acquaintance of Henslee, and possibly a friend or girlfriend of the suspect, Kaps said.
Investigators believe the women were killed Monday morning, Kaps said.
Philip Beebe, an uncle of the suspect, told WZZM-TV that investigators had searched land owned by Junior Lee Beebe, then took him in for questioning.
"They took him in a car and said they were going someplace warm where they could talk," Philip Bebee told the station.

U.S. official in Pakistan to face murder charges - USATODAY.com

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan will pursue murder charges against a U.S. consular employee suspected in the shooting deaths of two armed men possibly intent on robbing him, a top prosecutor said Friday.

"The weak government, already frequently criticized for being subservient to the United States, will likely come under domestic pressure to be tough on the American. There were several small protests around the country after midday prayers, calling for the American to be punished.

Many Pakistanis regard the U.S. with suspicion or enmity because of its occupation of neighboring Afghanistan and regular missile attacks against militant targets in Pakistan's northwest. The government condemns those attacks, but is widely believed to agree to them privately, further angering its critics.

In a sign of the political sensitivities of the case, Interior Minister Rehman Malik was asked by a lawmaker in parliament whether he was trying to set the American free. 'I will never abet a criminal,' replied Malik.

A third Pakistani was killed in the incident Thursday in the bustling city of Lahore after being hit by a U.S. vehicle rushing to aid the American, who also in a car, according to police, who have said the driver could also face charges.

AppleInsider | Apple hit with class-action suit after girl drops, breaks iPhone 4's glass

"A California man became so angry after his daughter dropped his iPhone 4 and cracked its glass enclosure that he filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple alleging that its most recent handset design is defective.

In the complaint filed earlier this week, Los Angeles resident Donald LeBuhn claims that Apple has known for months that its industrial design of the iPhone 4 is defective but has failed to warn customers that normal use of the device can lead to a broken phone.

More specifically, LeBuhn said that he paid over $250 in September for a new iPhone 4 only to have it rendered essentially useless after his daughter dropped it from a height of roughly three feet while attempting to send a text message.

President and NASA honor fallen astronauts - Technology & science - Space - msnbc.com

"The White House and NASA paused on Thursday to remember more than a score of astronauts who were lost in the line of duty.

The space agency's Day of Remembrance — which is always observed on the last Thursday of January — has special meaning this year. Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the shuttle Challenger launch disaster.

Flags flew at half-staff at NASA centers nationwide. In addition, NASA officials laid wreaths at various memorials to honor the dead, including at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

In a statement issued by the White House, President Barack Obama reflected on the loss of Challenger's crew as well as other astronauts who 'made the ultimate sacrifice in support of NASA missions throughout the agency's storied history.'

'Fifty years ago, a young president facing mounting pressure at home propelled a fledgling space agency on a bold, new course that would push the frontiers of exploration to new heights,' Obama said. 'Today, on this Day of Remembrance, when NASA reflects on the mighty sacrifices made to push those frontiers, America’s space agency is working to achieve even greater goals. NASA’s new 21st-century course will foster new industries that create jobs, pioneer technology innovation, and inspire a new generation of explorers through education — all while continuing its fundamental missions of exploring our home planet and the cosmos.'

Facebook offers new security options - Security

Facebook is rolling out two new security options. Considering the flack they are taking with new advertising models that might hinder privacy and two high-profile account hijackings this week, Facebook needed a positive spin on something. It looks as if theyve found it.

Earlier this week, Facebook announced that they would soon turn likes and check-ins into advertising revenue. This set off the normal privacy debates, when really aside from Wall spam, many users wont notice a change. Truth is, the Sponsored Stories advertising program is likely to result in ads that are simply ignored by users.

Around the time that the new advertising program was making headlines, word spread that French president Nicolas Sarkozys Facebook account was compromised. The defacement resulted in a supposed message from him announcing his retirement in 2012. The message was later removed and claimed as false.

It is likely that the software glitch that led to Sarkozys problems is the same one Facebook fixed after Mark Zuckerbergs fan page was defaced with an odd message of its own. While Sarkozys issue was mainly ignored by those outside of the security world, Zuckerbergs defacement became worldwide news almost instantly.

Addressing the odd post by their founder, Facebook told CNET, A bug enabled status postings by unauthorized people on a handful of public pages. The bug has been fixed.

Inside Sony's next-generation PSP

But Sony's NGP PlayStation--due this holiday season--makes the engines in those devices--even the rumored iPad 2--seem slow by comparison.

Sony's next-generation PlayStation Portable has a processor with a whopping four cores.

Here's Sony's "Next Generation Portable Entertainment System" spec sheet in all of its tersely worded alphanumeric glory: "CPU: ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 core)...GPU: SGX543MP4+"

Translation: an advanced ARM central processing unit (CPU) with four processing cores and an equally advanced graphics processing unit (GPU) from Imagination Technologies, also with four cores.

"That's pretty leading edge," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at the Linley Group, a chip consulting firm. "We're starting to see some other quad-core, and [Nvidia's] Tegra 3 is supposed to be quad-core," he said. Nvidia's Tegra 3 is expected to be announced at Mobile World Congress next month.

And how fast might that be? "Sony is providing consumers with a mobile device with about four times the CPU and GPU performance of an iPhone 4," said Joe Byrne, a senior analyst at the Linley Group.

UK police arrest WikiLeaks backers for Web attacks

(Reuters) - British police arrested five young men on Thursday as they and U.S. authorities conducted searches as part of a probe into Internet activists who carried out cyber attacks against groups they viewed as enemies of the WikiLeaks website.

"The arrests were related to recent 'distributed denial of service' (DDoS) attacks by an online group calling themselves Anonymous," London police said in a statement.

In the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said that agents executed more than 40 search warrants as part of its investigation and that the attacks were facilitated by software the group made available for free on the Internet.

"The FBI is working closely with its international law enforcement partners and others to mitigate these threats," the agency said in a statement, adding that there were other, unspecified investigative and enforcement actions in the Netherlands, Germany and France.

WikiLeaks, which was founded by Australian-born Julian Assange, has disclosed classified U.S. diplomatic dispatches which included candid and embarrassing assessments of world leaders as well as classified documents related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Studio executives eye rehab for Charlie Sheen

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Even before Charlie Sheen's Thursday hospitalization, execs working with "Two and a Half Men" had been waiting for a trigger to get the actor to seek professional help, sources told The Hollywood Reporter this week.

The situation has reached the point that WBTV brass would be happy to shut down the show to give Sheen a chance to enter rehab. They were hoping for some pivotal incident that would give the studio an opportunity to force the rehab issue, something to which Sheen has been resistant.

"They are all afraid Charlie will end up dead," one talent rep close to the show told THR. "It is literally day by day."

"If he did anything to delay production or put it in jeopardy, they'd shut it down and try to force him to go to rehab," another talent rep close to the show said.

Sheen's recent trip to the hospital will not delay the show immediately since "Men" is on hiatus this week. Sheen was taken to the hospital due to "severe abdominal pains" Thursday morning. The website TMZ reported that the actor had a "briefcase full of cocaine" delivered to his home -- and was allegedly using the drug during a 36-hour bender prior to the hospitalization.

Jaguar celebrates 50th birthday of E-Type sports car

By Nigel Case
Jaguar is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the E-Type, the brand's iconic sports car with events all year. One of the events, so far, is not the introduction of a new E-Type, as much as the brand's fans would love to see it.

If there is to be one, it's likely to show up at the Geneva Motor Show and the New York Auto Show and the Goodwood Festival of Speed where Jag says its going to celebrate.

Nothing says Jaguar like the E-Type. It debuted in Geneva in 1961. The car defined the sleek, low-slung, muscular appearance that still defines Jag.

"Half a century of progress has not diminished the significance of the E-Type," said Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director Jaguar Cars and Chairman Jaguar Heritage. "It was a sensation when it was launched, and remains Jaguar's most enduring and iconic symbol."

Government says 'no need to panic' over Mandela hospitalization

JOHANNESBURG—Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela was starting his third day in a Johannesburg hospital Friday, but the South African government says there is no need to panic.

In a statement late Thursday, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe offered no specifics on why Mandela, 92, was taken to the hospital Wednesday, but said he was undergoing specialized tests.

Motlanthe, acting president while President Jacob Zuma attended the World Economic Forum in Switzerland and then headed to a weekend African Union summit in Ethiopia, referred to Mandela's history of respiratory problems. Mandela contracted tuberculosis during his 27 years in prison.

"There has been mounting concern about the health of the former president Nelson Mandela," Motlanthe said. "Medically there is no need to panic."

Homophobia unlikely in gay activist murder: police

By Barry Malone

KAMPALA (Reuters) - A Ugandan gay rights activist murdered after his photo was printed on the cover of a newspaper that called for gays to be executed was likely killed during a robbery, police said on Thursday.

David Kato was one of three people featured in Uganda's Rolling Stone newspaper in October who won an injunction this month barring it from continuing its anti-gay campaign that had pictured gays under the headline: "Hang Them."

Kato said he had received death threats since Rolling Stone's publication.

U.S. President Barack Obama expressed sadness over Kato's murder and called on the government of Uganda to investigate.

Forensics experts collect the remains of Nkundindiza in Nabweru

By Steven Candia, Jimmy Muwanika and Saudha Nakandha

THE Police have retrieved the remains of a man secretly buried in a family house, as gory details of his murder unfolded in Kibwa village, Wakiso district.

The remains of Ronald Nkundindiza, 30, a heavy-set man, going by the portrait displayed by his relatives, were retrieved in an operation that lasted over one hour in Nabweru North zone.

Acting on information from one of the suspects, the Kawempe Police boss Moses Ocheng led a team to the scene in the morning and sealed it off as curious and shocked residents flocked the place.

However, work to exhume the body only started at 10:00am when a Police truck loaded with armed officers, pathologists and forensics experts and the key suspect, Sadam Suubi, 19, a cousin to Nkundindiza, arrived.

The Police had to contend with the irate crowd, mainly mourners who had gathered at the home early in the week for the burial of Nkundindiza's elder brother as they bayed for the suspect's blood.

Using hoes and spades, the Policemen dug through the heap of soil in one of the rooms and eventually recovered a grey polythene bag containing the remains of Nkundindiza, popularly known as Nkunda.

Shock-stricken relatives and area residents tried to lynch Suubi, but the Police whisked him away.

Speaking at the scene, Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said a DNA test would be carried out on the remains.

Nkunda's body was retrieved from a shallow grave dug in one of the rooms, filled with a mound of soil and pile of garbage.

To keep the murder secret, the perpetrators sealed off the room permanently.

The last born in a family of seven, Nkunda went missing in September 2009, and his whereabouts, until Wednesday, remained shrouded in mystery, owing to different accounts.

Nabakooba said five people, among them two brothers of the deceased, Robert Birayira, 41, Brown Mande, and Sadam, had been arrested in connection with the murder.

The other suspects in Police custody are Rose Justine Mukhobe, the estranged wife of the deceased, and Moses Sserunkuma, a former Rapid Response Unit (RRU) operative.

While the Police suspect that Nkunda could have been killed in a property wrangle, Suubi said Nkunda was murdered by Birayira in a fight after a drink in a nearby bar.

"When they reached the parking yard, Birayira got a hoe and hit Nkunda on the back of the head and he died instantly," said Suubi, who claims he was on night duty at the parking yard and saw it happen.

He, however, exonerated Nkunda's former wife, saying she was not part of the plot.

"I was ordered to help carry the body to the room and under strict instructions not to talk about it," he said, adding that the incident had left him extremely traumatised.

But what shocked the Police, relatives and residents was the fact that even after the murder ,Mande, Suubi and Birayira continued to live in the same house, with Birayira, occupying a room next to where Nkunda's body lay.

The soil to conceal the body, Suubi said, was ferried in under the guise of completing the family house.

The Police said a plot of land belonging to Nkunda, allegedly sold off by the brothers after Nkunda's disappearance, could have been at the centre of the murder.

Relatives yesterday said for the last one year, Suubi had been managing Nkunda's businesses, claiming to send the profits to Nkunda.

Close to one year and five months after his disappearance, Nkunda's relatives and close friends had been served with conflicting accounts concerning his whereabouts, until Wednesday when Suubi spilled the beans.

For a long time, the Police said, Suubi had fed Nkunda's relatives on conflicting accounts of Nkunda's whereabouts, at times claiming he had travelled to Juba or Iraq and at times South Africa.

The breakthrough came after mourners, who had come to bury Nkunda's eldest brother, Edward Munyarukyiko, on Monday piled pressure on Suubi to disclose the whereabouts of Nkunda given that he lived with him prior to his disappearance.

Mourners got concerned and turned the heat on Suubi on Tuesday after Nkunda failed to show up for the burial.

Remarks by a mourner under the influence of alcohol reportedly triggered off a series of events, culminating into the discovery.

"Because of his conflicting accounts, the relatives became suspicious and handed him over to the area LCs, who in turn handed him over to the Police. He disclosed the details and offered to lead the Police to where the body had been buried," said Adam Swiaf Walusimbi, a neighbour.

Suubi was brought by Nkunda as a small boy from the village to work as a casual labourer.
