AARP offers free tax preparation program - journal-news.net | News, sports, jobs, community information for Martinsburg - The Journal

"MARTINSBURG - The AARP Tax-Aide free tax preparation program will begin preparing 2010 federal and state tax returns today.

It will have 10 locations this year, since it added a location at South Jefferson Public Library. The Saturday location for Jefferson County is new this year and will be at the Ranson Civic Center. The program continues to serve families and individuals of all ages with both sites that are appointment-only and walk-in sites.

Some are open Saturdays and evenings for working families.

The tax law that was passed at the end of 2010 restored some tax benefits that were due to expire. Unfortunately, because of the late passage of the bill, some forms will not be available at the start of the tax season. The program will not be able to prepare returns for some taxpayers until March 1. This includes taxpayers who claim the educator expense deduction, claim a deduction for tuition and fees, claim the first-time homebuyers credit or repayment of the prior credit or those who itemize deductions (Schedule A).

Program officials encourage everyone to wait until they have all their information before coming in. This is especially true for interest and dividend statements and brokerage statements.

All program volunteers are ready to help in any way and look forward to seeing regular clients and meeting new ones. All sites are subject to school and county closings due to holidays and inclement weather.
