U.S. weighs need to use oil reserve

William Daley, President Obama's chief of staff, said Sunday that the administration was looking at all options, including using the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, to ensure that rising oil prices resulting from turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa do not threaten the U.S. economy.

Concern that the unrest will spread to major oil-producing countries has created uncertainty in markets, Daley said on NBC's Meet the Press. With the recovery gaining momentum, the administration is looking at steps to ease the effect if crude oil, now at its highest price since 2008, keeps surging.

The Obama administration faces increased pressure from some congressional Democrats to draw on the domestic-reserve program as consumers pay higher gasoline prices. - Bloomberg News
