Mar leads Tory leadership race But most Albertans undecided on who should be next premier: poll

An early poll suggests Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Gary Mar is leading the race to become the province's next premier, but experts say most Albertans are undecided and the race is still up in the air.

The poll, commissioned by the Edmonton Journal and the Calgary Herald, surveyed 900 Albertans of all political stripes and found nearly two out of three are undecided or don't plan to vote in the fall contest.

Among decided voters, Mar leads rival Ted Morton by four percentage points, with former justice minister Alison Redford in third place.

"The conclusion to draw from this poll is really that a lot of the public hasn't tuned in yet," Environics pollster Tony Coulson said, noting the race has just begun and most Albertans are focused on their summer vacations.
