Russia sees no Gaddafi role in shaping Libya's future

MOSCOW, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi would not influence decisions on the country's future, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Friday.

He was speaking a day after Libyan Foreign Minister Abdul Ati al-Obeidi ended a visit here to discuss the North African country's conflict.

"As we learned from Libyan representatives from Tripoli, the principal decision was that Gaddafi should not personally participate in any political negotiations about the crisis settlement and the rebuilding of this country," Bogdanov told Voice of Russia radio.

"Gaddafi has gradually come to a conclusion that it's time for him to leave power," Bogdanov said.

The diplomat said Russia's interests in Libya would not be damaged regardless of who came to power there.

"Any Libyan leadership will be interested in substantive all-round cooperation with the Russian Federation, including obeying the contracts signed previously," he said.
