Malik hints at grand operation in Karachi

Meanwhile, the death toll from target killings reached 36 in two days. Talking to reporters after arriving in the city on the orders of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, he said peace would be restored to the city within two days. He urged citizens of the provincial metropolis to remain calm, saying the government would not disappoint them. He said the government had decided to take strict action against the troublemakers on the information of intelligence agencies.

"The government will no longer tolerate any violence in Karachi. I promise to restore peace and control the worsening law and order in Karachi within two days," Rehman Malik said. Later, Interior Minister Rehman Malik called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan at the Governor's House. They discussed the overall law and order in the city, and agreed to take indiscriminate strict action against the elements involved in incidents of target killings.
